being your own boss

Being your own boss isn't all that it's cracked up to be.

You truly need to weigh the benefits of self-employment, because it is not for everyone. Right now, I am my own boss and here's what I have to say about him (or me).

My boss makes me work long hours. My boss wakes me up in the middle of the night with new ideas that must be written down or typed up on the computer. My boss makes me pay for all of my own taxes and health insurance, and requires me to furnish my own office. My boss blames me for every problem that the company might have. It's never anyone else's fault - only mine. My boss can sometimes get down on me about production, as if it were physically possible to do more - but there's only one of me!! (Or is there?)

On the bright side, my boss is never intimidating. He doesn't make me suck up to him, and he even lets me set my own hours. Granted, sometimes they are erratic and sometimes he makes me work fifteen hours days (or more), but he also promises to reward me with all of the profit. I'm not working to pay off his BMW - I'm working to afford my own. The words "golden parachute" aren't even part of his vocabulary. My boss lets me keep all of my taxes until the end of the year, so I can spend them now if I need to and figure out a way to pay them off later. Best of all, when I do a good job, my boss gives me all the credit. When business is good, it's because of my hard work. I wish all bosses were like this, but then again, few are allowed to be unless they are their own.
